HOW SAFE AND SOBER PROM NIGHT WORKS

At a series of high school assemblies preceding prom season, Kurt Larson kicks-off the program by presenting a bluntly realistic perspective of the tragic effects of drinking and drugs, based upon his experience in representing area families of those affected by alcohol and drug-addled drivers. Kurt also offers our young adults a glimpse of the criminal, civil, and practical consequences these decisions can have on their future. The timing is perfect for this message, as our soon-to-be graduates are stepping into adulthood and beginning to make decisions about their future beyond high school.

Kurt also gives students encouragement, and confirms that we are pulling for them. During the month leading up to prom night, donated funds are used to broadcast a strong message of community support to our students. Students taking the pledge will wear their Safe and Sober Prom Night t-shirts and/or wrist bands to school, and schools are provided posters, pledge cards, and letters to parents with a reminder that we need their support on prom night too. Students will see public service announcements on television, radio, and billboards to reminding them we care and want them to succeed.

As further encouragement to sign the pledge to stay drug and alcohol free on prom night, the high school with the highest participation in each region can win up to $1,000 for their class. With this element of healthy competition between schools, the students encourage each other to take the pledge. The result is a positive peer-pressure environment, and it is proven to be effective.
